奈良先端科学技術大学院大学は1991年に創設され、その5年後に物質創成科学研究科（現在の先端科学技術研究科・物質創成科学領域）が設置されました。1998年には第1期生（博士前期課程）の受け入れを開始し、菊池純一教授が主宰するバイオミメティック科学研究室も同時に発足しました。

菊池教授は、物質創成科学研究科創設時に着任した初代教授の一人で、1982年に工学博士（九州大学）を取得後、長崎大学助手、九州大学助手、佐賀大学助教授、九州大学助教授を経て、本学教授に就任しました。本学においては、2007年に学長補佐、2011年には副研究科長を歴任しました。バイオミメティック科学研究室では、生体系に学び、生体系を超える分子材料、分子システムの開発を通じて、物質科学が生命科学ならびに情報科学と融合した新しい研究領域をめざした研究を行ってきました。具体的な研究ターゲットとして、人工酵素、人工シグナル伝達系、有機無機ハイブリッドベシクル「セラソーム」、分子通信システムの開発を行いました。

1998年は現在の研究室主宰者であるゲナエル・ラッペン教授が博士を取得した年でもあります。ラッペン教授は、ジャン＝ピエール・ソヴァージュ教授（2016年ノーベル賞受賞者）の指導の下、ストラスブール大学で博士号を取得しました。2018年に、菊池教授の退職に伴って、20年間の歴史を有するバイオミメティック科学研究室を現在のラッペン教授が後継しました。ラッペン教授は、人類が生み出した機械にヒントを得て生み出すテクノミメティク分子の開発をすすめており、分子モーターやナノカーの合成にこれまで取り組んできました。また、2017年には第1回ナノカーレースをフランス・トゥールーズで主催しました。現在のバイオミメティック分子科学研究室では、菊池教授によって牽引されてきた生体に学ぶバイオミメティクスに加えて、テクノミメティクスのアプローチを取り入れた融合研究を推進しています。


NAIST was established in 1991 and the graduate school of Materials Science 5 years later. In March 1998, the building was ready with four professors establishing their laboratories. That year, eight new professors have been recruited to complete the academic staff. Prof. Jun-ichi Kikuchi was one of them to establish the Biomimetic Materials Science Laboratory.

Prof. Kikuchi obtained his diploma of Doctor in Engineering in 1982 from Kyushu University working under the supervision of Prof. Yukito Murakami on cyclophane-based enzyme models. After being Assistant Professor at Nagasaki University, he moved to Kyushu University before to be promoted Associate Professor at Saga University. After coming back to Kyushu University in 1993. From 1998, he started his own laboratory conducting research aiming at a new research field where material science is integrated with life science and information science through learning from biological systems and developing molecular materials and molecular systems that exceed biological systems. The biomimetic science is taking inspiration from Nature to imitate (mimic) natural functions or materials. As a specific research target, we developed artificial enzymes, artificial signaling systems, organic-inorganic hybrid vesicles "cerasome" and molecular communication system.

As a faculty member he also took part on the administration of NAIST. In april 2007 Prof. Jun-ichi Kikuchi are elected as the Assistants to the President and in april 2011, he has been elected as the Vice Dean of the Graduate School.

1998 was the establishment of Kikuchi's laboratory in NAIST and also the year of the PhD defense of Gwénaël Rapenne in Strasbourg (France) under the supervision of Prof. Jean-Pierre Sauvage (2016 Nobel laureate). Twenty years after he creates his laboratory, Prof. Kikuchi retires and Prof. Rapenne has been recruited as his successor. The name of the laboratory slightly changed to Biomimetic and Technomimetic Molecular Science Laboratory to take into account some new field of research based on a technomimetic approach which is complementary to the biomimetic strategy developed many years by Prof. Kikuchi. The synthesis of nanovehicles and our participation to the nanocar race is one exemple of this new direction of research.
